Nuno Felt test samples and process
I want to make a Nuno felted vest and I’m not sure which fabric I should use as this is my first attempt at making a garment. So I decided to try some sampler squares comparing silk gauze 3mm, Silk habotai 5mm and cotton scrim.
They are all 7″ square
I am using some hand-dyed Merino and some black and white Merino
I want to make a sandwich with the fabric in the centre, so I lay out white, black and 1/2 white and 1/2 black
Then I put on the 3 7″ squares and the the hand painted merino
Then I soaped, rubbed, rolled and threw.
The finished squares measure approx. 5.5′ with the silk habotai just slightly larger with some puckering in the centre where I didn’t put as much wool.
All 3 samplers have a unique look and feel to them and I like them all.
I think I’ll will make the vest using the cotton scrim with a black wool base.
I wish now I had made one more sampler square using only wool with no fabric as another comparison.
